How Painful Are Dental Implants? Honest Answer

Fear of pain is the most common reason people delay getting dental implants. So let us give you an honest answer — because the reality is much more reassuring than most patients expect before their first consultation.

During the Surgery: Is It Painful?

No — the surgery itself is not painful. Dental implant placement is performed under local anaesthesia, which completely numbs the treatment area. You will feel pressure and vibration during the procedure, but no pain. Most patients describe the experience as no more uncomfortable than having a tooth filled.

For patients who are highly anxious, TakiDent also offers IV conscious sedation — a twilight sedation that keeps you relaxed and semi-conscious but not fully under general anaesthesia. Many patients who opt for sedation report remembering very little of the procedure.

The entire implant placement surgery typically takes 30–90 minutes per implant depending on complexity, bone condition, and whether any bone grafting is required.

After Surgery: What to Expect

Once the local anaesthesia wears off — usually 2–4 hours after the procedure — you may begin to feel some discomfort. Here is a realistic day-by-day guide:

Day 1–2

Mild to moderate soreness at the implant site. Swelling may begin to develop, peaking around 48 hours. Some patients experience bruising of the gum or jaw. Over-the-counter ibuprofen (400–600mg every 6 hours with food) is typically sufficient to manage discomfort. TakiDent provides a post-operative prescription for pain relief and antibiotics to prevent infection.

Day 3–5

Swelling begins to subside. Pain reduces noticeably — most patients describe this stage as mild achiness rather than pain. Many patients return to normal desk work by day 3. Soft diet is still recommended.

Day 6–14

For most patients, significant discomfort has resolved by the end of the first week. Any remaining sensitivity is minor and does not require pain medication. Sutures (if placed) are typically removed or dissolve around day 10–14.

Pain Scale Comparison

Procedure Typical Pain During Recovery Discomfort
Dental implant placement None (anaesthesia) Mild–moderate (3–5 days)
Tooth extraction None (anaesthesia) Moderate (3–7 days)
Root canal treatment None (anaesthesia) Mild (1–3 days)
Wisdom tooth removal None (anaesthesia) Moderate–severe (5–10 days)

Most implant patients report that the post-operative discomfort is less than they feared and is notably less intense than after a wisdom tooth extraction. The implant site is a controlled surgical wound — far less traumatic than an emergency extraction.

What's Normal vs What to Watch For

Normal Post-Operative Symptoms:

  • Swelling of the gum and jaw, peaking at 48 hours
  • Mild to moderate soreness managed by ibuprofen or prescribed pain relief
  • Light bleeding or oozing from the site for the first 24 hours
  • Bruising on the face or jaw (resolves in 1–2 weeks)
  • Slight jaw stiffness for a few days

Contact Your Dentist If You Experience:

  • Severe, worsening pain after day 3 (may indicate dry socket or infection)
  • Heavy bleeding not controlled by gentle pressure
  • Signs of infection: increasing redness, warmth, pus, or fever
  • The implant feeling loose or moving
  • Severe numbness lasting more than 24 hours (rare nerve proximity issue)
