What Are Dental Implants? Complete Beginner's Guide

TABLE OF CONTENTS
If you have a missing tooth — or are about to lose one — dental implants are widely considered the gold standard replacement. They look and feel like natural teeth, last decades with proper care, and preserve the jawbone in a way that dentures and bridges cannot. This complete guide covers everything a first-time patient needs to know.
What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium screw that is surgically inserted into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Once the bone has fused around the implant (a process called osseointegration), a ceramic crown is attached on top — creating a replacement tooth that is virtually indistinguishable from a natural one.
A complete dental implant system has three components:
- The implant body (fixture): The titanium screw inserted into the jawbone — this is the "root" of the replacement tooth.
- The abutment: A small connector piece that attaches to the implant body and protrudes above the gum line.
- The crown: The visible tooth-shaped ceramic cap that screws or cements onto the abutment.
Why Titanium?
Titanium is the material of choice for implant bodies because it is biocompatible — the human body does not reject it. Titanium has been used in orthopaedic and dental surgery for over 50 years with an outstanding safety record. The material naturally integrates with bone tissue through a process called osseointegration, creating a permanent, stable anchor for the crown above.
Some premium implants now use zirconia (ceramic) implant bodies as a metal-free alternative, which can be beneficial for patients with metal sensitivities. TakiDent offers both titanium and zirconia implant options.
What Is Osseointegration?
Osseointegration is the biological process by which bone cells grow directly onto and into the surface of the titanium implant, locking it permanently in place. This process takes 3–6 months after the implant is placed. During this time the implant is stable but the final crown is not yet fitted. Once osseointegration is confirmed by X-ray, the abutment and crown are attached — completing the restoration.
Modern implant surface treatments (sand-blasting, acid-etching, hydrophilic coatings) have significantly accelerated osseointegration timelines. Premium brands such as Straumann's SLActive surface technology achieve reliable integration in as little as 6–8 weeks in ideal conditions.
Types of Dental Implants
Single Tooth Implant
The most common scenario: one implant body supporting one crown to replace a single missing tooth. This is the most conservative option as it does not affect adjacent teeth (unlike a bridge, which requires grinding down neighbouring teeth).
Multiple Implants
Where several individual teeth are missing, multiple single implants can be placed. Alternatively, an implant-supported bridge can span a gap using fewer implants to support more crowns.
All-on-4 Implants
Where an entire upper or lower arch of teeth is missing or failing, All-on-4 uses just four strategically angled implants to support a full fixed arch of teeth. This is a life-changing solution for patients with full dentures or severely deteriorated teeth. Learn more on the All-on-4 Turkey page.
All-on-6 Implants
Similar to All-on-4 but using six implants for even greater stability — often preferred in the upper jaw where bone density is lower. See our All-on-6 page for details.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Most adults with good general health are suitable for dental implants. The key requirements are:
- Sufficient jawbone density and volume (bone grafting can address deficiencies)
- Healthy gums — active gum disease must be treated first
- Non-smoker or willing to stop smoking around the procedure (smoking significantly reduces success rates)
- No uncontrolled diabetes (controlled diabetes is manageable)
- Not currently undergoing cancer radiotherapy to the jaw
A free consultation and 3D CBCT scan at TakiDent will determine your candidacy precisely.
